Reflection:
“The Son radiates God’s own Glory and expresses the very character of God” Hebrews 1:3a.
Imagine someone who has been with you “forever” one day revealing to you that they don’t really know you for who you truly are? Jesus had a moment like that. We find it in John’s Gospel. Philip makes this request of Jesus, “Show us the Father and we will be satisfied” (Jn14:8). Philip wants Jesus to show him God. What was Jesus response? “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and yet you still don’t know who I am? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father! So why are you asking me to show him to you?” The Gospel of John is clear:
For the law was given through Moses, but God’s unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God, is near to the Fathers heart. He has revealed God to us. John 1:17-18
Wow! John’s Gospel and the author of Hebrews have the same passion. Both want us to know, “Jesus radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God”! What is Jesus encouragement for Philip, and for us? “Just believe” (Jn14:11). God, thank you, that just like you made it clear for Philip, you have allowed us to “See Jesus” for who he truly is … Immanuel…!
