28 Since we are receiving a Kingdom that is unshakable, let us be thankful and please God by worshiping him with holy fear and awe. 29 For our God is a devouring fire. Hebrews 12:28-29
Gospel Story: Luke 15:11-32 Walk away… I will follow! It’s the Fathers Heart!
Today’s Scripture: 4 Give honour to marriage, and remain faithful to one another in marriage. God will surely judge people who are immoral and those who commit adultery.5 Don’t love money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said,“I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.” 6 So we can say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me?” Hebrews 13:4-6
Reflection:
I’d like to continue to suggest that chapter 13 as it follows Hebrews 12:28-29 presents to us some very practical ways in which we get to please God through our personal worship.
Before we celebrate the invitation to worship, expressed in Hebrews 13:4-6 I find myself asking this question, why, on earth is marriage and family life is so important to God? SEX and MONEY—Family life….it fills the pages not only of our tabloid magazines, but throughout the ages the importance of these subjects fill the pages of the Bible,.
Why are they so important? Especially when the pioneer and perfecter of our faith (Jesus- Heb 12:2) seems to suggest that marriage in particular (Luke 20:34-38) does not exist in eternity—Kinda like the fact that when I die, what I have in the bank doesn’t necessarily automatically transfer into an account in Heaven. Or does it?
Why does Scripture suggest to us that how we handle sex and money now plays a significant role in wether or not we get to experience the afterlife. Even though Jesus seems to suggest this is not necessarily true… Matthew 21:28-32? So if Sex and Money are neither determining factor in our our experience of the afterlife, nor will the present themselves as issues for all eternity-why are they important now?
Why is our approach to Marriage and Money now, important when it comes the unshakable Kingdom God gives us through our faith in Jesus? Because Unshakable Family Devotion is what our King and His Kingdom has for us. Ponder what Jesus reveals about the Father. Ponder that together with the fact that our union with God at the resurrection of the dead is described as a “marriage” made in Heaven.…at which point we will rejoice with “let the feasting begin!” In Christ that unshakable family devotion of the father has been revealed to us..NOW, in the present. So until the marriage feast in heaven occurs, our lives get to reveal to others the unshakable family devotion that Jesus reveals the Father has for us—we see it in the Parable of the Prodical Son. Reflecting on this same parable, Bono of U2 coins the phrase “Walk away, Walk away, I will follow - Bono too reveals the Father’s heart. So too may our marriages and our relationship with money, reveal the same “unshakable” Family Devotion that God has for us.
