May 15 WHAT GOD DOES!
THE CHOSEN!
ARE HUMBLE IN HEART
A Verse to Remember: 1 Peter 2:9
….., for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE: Hebrews 5:4-5
4 And no one can become a high priest simply because he wants such an honor. He must be called by God for this work, just as Aaron was. 5 That is why Christ did not honor himself by assuming he could become High Priest. No, he was chosen by God, who said to him,“You are my Son. Today I have become your Father.”
Gospel Story: Luke 19:1-10 Jesus and Zacchaeus
Philippians 2:5 You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. (check out the rest of Chapter 2 to find out what kind of attitude Jesus had…HINT: It reflects the heart of God’s Chosen People.)
1 Peter 5:5And all of you, dress yourselves in humility as you relate to one another, for “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
Reflection: God’s Chosen One’s have the same attitude that Jesus had. And what kind of attitude is that? They are humble. Moses was a great leader of God’s people. The Bible describes Mose like this, “Now Moses was very humble—more humble than any other person on earth.” Numbers 12:3. The same is true for Jesus Hebrews tells us. Jesus didn’t “assume” he could become High Priest because he was the WORD made flesh. No He let God choose how he would live and die on earth. Read Philippians 2:6-11 and you’ll see something amazing.
So if God’s “Chosen” are humble, what does that look like for us. Let’s go to Philippians 2 again: (vs1-4)
“Is there any encouragement from belonging to Christ? Any comfort from his love? Any fellowship together in the Spirit? Are your hearts tender and compassionate? 2 Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose.”3 Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. 4 Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.
Would you believe me if I said that when God chooses you or I, we don’t have to work at being humble? True? Ponder this… when you or I get chosen to be on someone’s team it’s because I have a skill, a talent, an ability they want and need. The sports people choose me because they love what I have, I benefit their team. God on the other hand chooses me because He loves who I am. Peter discovered this truth when God chose him (Lk5:1-11). Being “chosen” by God is humbling. In the words of many and Triad Gang member in Hong Kong, “why me?”. So when God choose you and I, we become like Jesus, humble. And in our humility, we reveal the Goodness of God.
